Bleeding Radiators in a Hot Water Heating System

  1. Does your boiler have an auto-fill valve or is fed manually?
  2. Manual feed will require two people one at the boiler an done at the radiator. Boiler person must make sure water pressure does not exceed 30 psi or relief valve will open. Communicate to each other by cellphone or tapping on pipes.
  3. An auto-fill valve will allow one person to bleed the radiators as it will maintain the correct water level as you bleed each radiator.
  4. Bleed each radiator starting at that closest radiator to the boiler on the lower floor to the farthest radiator on the upper floor this will push the air to one radiator and allow you to vent it.
  5. In rare instances you may need to force feed the water through the drain cock at the bottom of the boiler with a hose. This is a two person operation.
  6. If you keep having a drop in water pressure or air entering the system you have a leak in the system. It could be from a leaking relief or shut off valve, a corroded pipe, or crack inside the boiler
  7. Do not use boiler stop leak it can plug the pipes in the system and cause irreparable damage.
  8. All systems should have an auto-fill valve with a built in bypass valve, Cash-Acme is a good brand. This will maintain the 10-13 psi water pressure at all times saving you to have to manually feed the boiler every time the tenant calls about "No Heat."
